Prime Venture Partners

Prime Venture Partners backs early-stage technology startups in India, partnering with founders building businesses across fintech, enterprise software, consumer technology, healthcare, education, and artificial intelligence.

Overview

Prime Venture Partners is a Bengaluru-based venture capital firm established in 2012 as AngelPrime. It adopted the name Prime Venture Partners in 2015. The firm takes a founder-first approach, often becoming the first institutional investor in technology startups. Its partners bring experience as entrepreneurs, operators, and technology executives, working closely with founders on business strategy, product development, hiring, sales, and fundraising.

Investment Focus and Stage

Prime Venture Partners invests primarily at the Pre-Seed, Seed, and Series A stages. Its first cheque typically ranges from $1 million to $4 million, with additional capital reserved for follow-on investments. Across a company's funding lifecycle, the firm may allocate approximately $8 million to $10 million.

The firm looks for founding teams with deep knowledge of the problems they are solving, differentiated products, and opportunities to serve large markets. Its investment interests span fintech, enterprise SaaS, artificial intelligence, healthcare, education, logistics, consumer technology, and digital commerce. Prime prefers to lead or meaningfully participate in early funding rounds rather than make small investments in larger rounds.

Fund Size and Portfolio

Prime Venture Partners has raised four funds, with total assets under management of approximately $425 million. Its fund history reflects a progression from an initial $8 million vehicle to a $120 million fourth fund.

  • Fund I (2012): $8 million. The maiden fund backed seven companies, including Quizizz, Happay, HackerEarth, and Synup. It generated a reported return of more than four times the invested capital for its limited partners.
  • Fund II (2015): $46 million. The second fund expanded the firm's early-stage investment activity across technology-driven businesses, including financial services, enterprise software, and consumer internet.
  • Fund III (2018): approximately $60 million. Raised at ₹400 crore, the third fund targeted opportunities across fintech, healthcare, education, logistics, and global SaaS.
  • Fund IV (2022): $120 million. Initially announced with a $100 million target and a $75 million first close in August 2021, the fund completed its final close at $120 million in February 2022. The International Finance Corporation, a World Bank Group institution, participated as an investor.
